First game world series 2024
ST. LOUIS – It’s been 12 years since David Freese earned his place in St. Louis Cardinals lore, playing hero twice in an epic comeback that paved the way to the Cardinals’ most recent World Series title.< https://quicklocs.com/ /p>
I was not at Busch Stadium for Game 6 of the 2011 World Series, but I had an excellent excuse: My wife was eight months pregnant with our first child, and not only did I not want to be in a different town than her, I honestly just wanted to stare at her until she felt the slightest twitch so we could sprint to the hospital. Instead, for Game 6, I went to Foley’s, the official Cardinals fan bar of New York City, where Andy Cohen and Jon Hamm scream alongside hundreds of fellow Toasted Ravioli eaters throughout the season. My wife came with me, but, as tends to happen with pregnant women, she got hot and tired, so she decided to go home around the sixth inning. She insisted I stay. I did not argue with her.
The Series began on October 19, earlier than the previous season, so that no games would be played in November. The Cardinals enjoyed home-field advantage for the series because the NL won the 2011 All-Star Game 5–1 on July 12. The 2011 World Series was the first World Series to go all seven games since the 2002 Series.

The best pro football teams in 1902 had been the Phillies and Athletics of Philadelphia, the Stars of Pittsburgh, and the Red and Blacks of Watertown, New York. Unfortunately, O’Rourke was unable to get any of those teams to participate in his hastily scheduled tournament. However, players from both the Phillies and Athletics got together and formed their own team that became known as the “New York” team. The other teams accepting O’Rourke’s invitation included the Orange, New Jersey Athletic Club; the Warlow Athletic Club; the New York Knickerbockers; and the Syracuse Athletic Club. O’Rourke’s plan was to set up a schedule that would allow the favored hometown Knickerbockers to play the neighboring Orange Athletic Club in the final Championship Game. This, he thought, would guarantee the best attendance and resulting gate receipts on New Year’s Day. Hoping to eliminate the weaker teams early, O’Rourke scheduled the Syracuse and “New York” teams to open the series and play pro football’s first indoor game on Dec. 28. O’Rourke incorrectly assumed “New York” would defeat Syracuse and then the stronger Knickerbockers would defeat both the weak Warlow Athletic Club and then the “New York” team. What the promoter did not count on was Syracuse loading up with “ringers” from other teams, including the entire backfield of the powerful Watertown Red and Blacks. The bolstered Syracuse A.C. not only won its opener 5-0, but also clobbered the Knickerbockers and Orange Athletic Club by 36-0 scores and claimed the 1902 indoor World Championship. Freddie Freeman hit the first game-ending grand slam in World Series history with two outs in the 10th inning to give the Los Angeles Dodgers a 6-3 victory over the New York Yankees in a drama-filled opener Friday.
• The similarities with Gibson’s are remarkable — a hobbled superstar in Game 1 at Dodger Stadium. In fact, his and Freeman’s are the only walk-off homers in World Series history where the team was down to its final out. The only other such homer in any postseason round was by Houston’s Yordan Alvarez in the 2022 American League Division Series Game 1.
1918: Red Sox 1, Cubs 0Though he would one day make his World Series mark in the batter’s box with the Yankees, Babe Ruth first did so as a Red Sox pitcher in 1916. After helping pitch Boston past Brooklyn that year, he got another shot in 1918, and delivered. The left-hander twirled a six-hit shutout in Chicago, though he went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts at the plate. Stuffy McInnis provided the offense with a fourth-inning RBI single off Hippo Vaughn, and Ruth completed the shutout before picking up another victory in Game 4 to help the Sox win their last championship for quite some time.
1946: Red Sox 3, Cardinals 2 (10 innings)The 154-game regular season wasn’t enough for the Cardinals to clinch the NL pennant, as they finished tied with the Brooklyn Dodgers and had to win a best-of-three series just for the right to play the Red Sox. Then, in World Series Game 1, nine innings weren’t enough to decide the opener between these storied franchises. Boston right fielder Tom McBride laced a two-out RBI single off St. Louis starter Howie Pollett in the ninth that tied the game at 2, then — after Pollett remained in the game for the 10th — Rudy York took him deep with a two-out homer that the Red Sox rode to a 3-2 win. The Cards would go on to win the series after falling behind, 3-2, by winning the final two games at Sportsman’s Park III in St. Louis, where the Cards drew more than one million fans for the first time in club history that season.

This became the third consecutive World Series Game 1 to go to extra innings, and, thanks to Jazz Chisholm Jr.’s single and two stolen bases, the Yankees had runners on the corners with one out in the 10th. When Anthony Volpe grounded to short, Edman made a nice diving stop on the ball but had trouble with the transfer and couldn’t complete a potential double play. Chisholm motored home.
“This last week has been really good for me,” Freeman said. “The first time I ran was when I ran out to give high fives to my teammates when we got introduced. Tried to stave off running as much as I could this week, treated it as much as I could.”
Over the past month, watching Freeman has been painful. Not only because throughout the Dodgers’ first 11 playoff games he hadn’t mustered an extra-base hit. Freeman is clearly in pain. His sprained ankle throbs. His body aches. He is an eight-time All-Star, a future Hall of Famer, a World Series champion with Atlanta in 2021. He had been through a brutal year already, with his 3-year-old son, Max, suffering through a bout of Guillain-Barré syndrome. Freeman kept pushing through the pain, hoping the five days off since the NLCS would do his body enough good to do something memorable.
Below is the full World Series schedule, including start times as well as TV and streaming info. Game 5 will be the last game of October. Depending on the results on Wednesday, the next MLB game will either be in November or March 2025.
