Dimon has remained a fiercely outspoken bitcoin and crypto critic even as Wall Street began to warm up the technology, calling it a « fraud » and a « Ponzi scheme » in April. https://nicksesen.com/ Dimon has said that if he was in government, he’d « shut it down, » and branded bitcoin a « waste of time, » calling it a « pet rock » that « does nothing. »
Dimon’s comments come as his institution continues to push ahead into the blockchain space. The banking giant launched its corporate stablecoin, JPM Coin, in 2017, which today is still available to select institutional clients. The bank also launched its blockchain platform, Onyx, in 2020, at the time hailing it as the first-ever bank-led project of its kind.
Dimon reiterated his harsh stance on Bitcoin, recalling his statement from seven years ago, in which he said he would “fire in a second” any JPMorgan trader caught trading Bitcoin. Despite this, JPMorgan has investments in exchange-traded funds tied to Bitcoin, such as the Grayscale Bitcoin Trust GBTC.
Dimon began his career as a management consultant at Boston Consulting Group. After earning an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1982, he joined American Express, working there, under the mentorship of Sandy Weill, until 1985. The following year, at age of 30, Dimon was appointed chief financial officer (CFO) of Commercial Credit and later became the firm’s president. He was chief operating officer (COO) of both the insurer Travelers and the brokerage firm Smith Barney from 1990 to 1998, when he became president of Citigroup. In 2000, he was appointed CEO of Bank One, overseeing its operations until merger with JPMorgan Chase in 2004. Dimon then became COO of JPMorgan Chase, assuming the role of CEO in 2006.
Dimon and other leading bank CEOs, who were on Capitol Hill Wednesday for a Senate hearing on regulating Wall Street, testified that their institutions have controls in place to detect and halt illicit crypto transactions.

An October 2021 paper by the National Bureau of Economic Research found that bitcoin suffers from systemic risk as the top 10,000 addresses control about one-third of all bitcoin in circulation. It is even worse for miners, with 0.01% controlling 50% of the capacity. According to researcher Flipside Crypto, less than 2% of anonymous accounts control 95% of all available bitcoin supply. This is considered risky as a great deal of the market is in the hands of a few entities.
